Operation Mincemeat is one of those rare shows that completely surprises you in the best way possible.
Going in you might expect a fairly serious retelling of a wartime operation. After all, it’s based on a real life WWII deception mission. But what you actually get is something wildly different! It’s a fast paced, irreverent and brilliantly funny musical that never takes itself too seriously, and is all the better for it as a result.
What really stands out is just how much is achieved by such a small cast. The fact that five performers carry the entire show feels almost unreal. They bounce between characters, accents and musical numbers with dizzying speed, and the energy never dips. By the end, you can’t help but wonder how they’re still standing. They must be absolutely shattered after each performance.
The tone is gloriously over the top! It’s camp, colourful and packed with personality. It feels fresh and unlike any other musical, blending sharp comedy with theatrical flair. There are clear echoes of Six in its bold, modern musical style combined with the kind of chaotic humour and quick fire delivery you might recognise from One Man, Two Guvnors or The Play That Goes Wrong. It’s a combination that works incredibly well, keeping the audience laughing throughout.
But what really elevates the show is the heart running through it. Beneath all the humour and absurdity are genuine, tender moments that give the story real emotional weight. It never forgets that this is rooted in a true wartime operation, and in that sense, the whole production feels like a tribute to the people behind it. That balance between silliness and sincerity is what makes it so memorable. It’s proof that history doesn’t have to be dry or distant. It can be vibrant, moving and deeply engaging.
My wife Kerry said that it was exactly what she needed that day. She said “It’s true what they say….. In a world that’s a mess, small flashes of joy are all any of us can hope for and tonight felt like one of mine. I was in awe of the speed, the seamless character changes, the brilliance of every transition…… absolute genius!”
She’s absolutely right about the character changes and transitions! Despite the chaos on stage, there’s a real sense of precision behind it all. The set is dynamic without being overwhelming, and the transitions are handled so fluently by the cast that everything feels seamless. The pace never lets up, and you’re completely swept along for the ride.
Most importantly, it’s just a pure joy to watch. In a world that can feel pretty heavy, this show offers a couple of hours of genuine escape, full of laughter, charisma, and sheer theatrical fun. It doesn’t just entertain, it lifts your mood completely.
In short… I absolutely loved it, and you will too!
Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
