I went into 2:22 A Ghost Story with a real sense of excitement. I hadn’t read up on it, seen any spoilers, or even glanced at other reviews, so I was looking forward to being surprised.
The first thing that struck me was how strong the performances were. Every actor on stage was brilliant, delivering believable and engaging characters. The set design was also superb, creating just the right atmosphere for a story like this. The script itself is thoughtful, with some interesting ideas about why ghosts are perceived the way they are, and there’s a twist at the end that works well (even if I did see it coming).
That said, while I enjoyed the show, I couldn’t help but feel there was so much more potential waiting to be unlocked. The pace never quite picked up in the way I hoped, and I found myself yearning for more tension, more scares and a bit more theatrical trickery. Compared with The Exorcist live on stage, which I thought was more gripping and effective, this felt a little tame for my taste.
Everyone has different expectations when it comes to horror and thrillers, and I would never judge anyone for loving this show. For me though, I expected more smoke and mirrors, more illusion, more ghostly goings on, and perhaps a touch more gore. Still, it did leave me thinking afterwards and piecing things together in my head, which may well have been the whole point.
